If you’ve made the decision to work for yourself and begin trading as a sole trader, (otherwise known as being self-employed) you will need to set up your accounts to record your income and expenses. You’ll also need to be aware of tax, national insurance and other factors that will affect the records you need to keep.
You’ll need to understand the income tax thresholds and the National Insurance Contributions (NICs) you will be required to pay. In order to do so, you must keep records of all your invoices and receipts you’ll need to do some bookkeeping. As a sole trader, there will be a number of business expenses you can claim back from HMRC. All sole traders need to complete an annual Self Assessment Tax Return and submit this to HMRC.
